The Frazier History Museum dives into Kentucky’s history through their new exhibition “Documenting Kentucky: Three Photographic Surveys,” featuring almost 150 photographs of Kentucky taken from 1935 – 2024.

The exhibition takes viewers on a visual timeline of Kentucky, sharing the identity, diversity, and landscapes of the state from Eastern Kentucky’s coal mines to the farms of Western Kentucky. The exhibition features the work of three photographic surveys: Kentucky Documentary Photography Project (2015 – 2024), the Depression-era Farm Security Administration efforts (1935 – 1943), and the original Kentucky Documentary Photographic Project (1975 – 1977).

“The stories these images tell—some stark, some joyful, all deeply human—remind us of the power of photography to record and reflect a place and its people,” Frazier Senior Curator of Exhibitions Amanda Briede said. “This exhibition is not just about Kentucky’s past. It’s also a mirror held up to its present and a conversation about its future.”

The exhibit will run through Nov. 9 and will participate in the Louisville Photo Biennial beginning in September.
