As I grow the audience for Louisville Independent, I want to pay writers to bring more stories from the community. So far, the work has been funded by me, along with some free work from several writers, community members, and Mediaura, who built and maintains our site. Since I’m not in a full-time gig currently, this work can get a bit expensive quickly.
I’m aware that ads have traditionally funded newspapers. While I don’t mind advertising, I don’t currently have a print product, and as a digital-only entity, I don’t want the website to be inundated with visual noise.
I thought if I could get a few of the folks who read us regularly to commit a small amount, like $5 each week or $10 each month, we’d have just enough revenue to fund a reasonable amount of new original work. Basically, we’ll take the pennies from your couch cushions.
