Community Foundation of Louisville released The Racial Justice Cohort report on Tuesday, April 22. The Report is the result of work by 12 local, Black-led organizations. The report, prepared by BKP Strategies, draws attention to the outcomes from the three-year process.
The cohort was formed in 2021. Each organization received up to $40,000 in renewable grants for three years and worked together to share knowledge, networks, and identify “best practices” to achieve their respective organizational goals.
“The Racial Justice Cohort was an opportunity for the Community Foundation to think differently about how we do philanthropy,” said Ron Gallo, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Louisville.. “We actively listened to community voices regarding urgent needs and engaged in shared decision-making with those most impacted. Our fundholders and community partners embraced this process which eventually led to the cohort. The final report shows powerful outcomes from the collaborative work of the 12 participating organizations.”
The work of the organizations was supported by Community Foundation of Louisville, in partnership with its charitable fundholders and the James Graham Brown Foundation, the Lift a Life Novak Family Foundation, BrightSpring Health Services, and Glick Philanthropies.
“This was the first time the Community Foundation of Louisville developed a multi-year, comprehensive systems-change strategy with a dedicated group of nonprofit leaders. This three-year initiative taught us ways to evolve from transactional to transformative relationships with our community partners. We are committed to integrating our new knowledge into our future philanthropic initiatives,” said Ramona Dallum, Senior Vice President, Community Leadership at the Community Foundation.
