The move puts the healthcare of thousands at risk.
The Trump Administration decided this week to withhold tens of millions of dollars worth of Title X funding from Planned Parenthood nationwide. In Kentucky, this decision will harm thousands of patients in the Louisville and Lexington metro areas who rely on Planned Parenthood for essential reproductive and sexual healthcare.
The organization is evaluating the impact of these actions but sees it as an attack on the nation’s family planning program that could lead to more than 3,500 low-income Kentuckians facing higher barriers to care or the potential loss of their access to healthcare. These services are essential to rural communities where other services to address family planning and sexual health are scarce or non-existent.
“Every single day, Donald Trump and Elon Musk are burning down critical components of our country and its health care system,” said Rebecca Gibron, CEO of Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawaíʻi, Alaska, Kentucky in a statement. “Now they’ve turned their attention to essential health care like birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing. Their agenda is the same as the anti-abortion groups that support them: punish patients, punish Planned Parenthood, and dictate which patients can get health care and what care they can get. This administration is set on dismantling access to reproductive health care, and now they are using our commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment to our patients and staff as an excuse to attack Planned Parenthood and the care we provide to the patients who need it most.
“In Kentucky, Title X provides affordable birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing to more than 3,500 people at Planned Parenthood who couldn’t otherwise afford these services,” Gibron continued. “These patients rely on Title X for their birth control and health care, and without this program, they may have no access at all. By withholding Title X funds, Trump and Musk’s federal government is denying health care and restricting patients’ freedom to control their bodies, their lives, and their futures.”
These cuts come at a time when the Supreme Court will hear cases that could allow states to block Medicaid patients from using Planned Parenthood Services. Americans, including 63% of Trump supporters, back the services provided by Planned Parenthood.
