Portland Museum ‘AHOY’ Project Will Received $250,000 After Unanimous Metro Council Vote

Despite cuts in many art programs in the city of Louisville, a couple of organizations received favorable support in the city budget. The Louisville Orchestra will get $325,000, which is $200,000 more than the original plan, and the Portland Museum will receive $250,000 towards its children’s museum project, Adventure House of You (AHOY). On Thursday, July 18, the Metro Council voted unanimously to approve the budget proposal.

Greenberg set the funding aside as part of his “Thrive by Five” early learning agenda.

AHOY will offer children a place to get lost in play. The immersive experience is located adjacent to the Portland Museum in the West End of Louisville.

“AHOY’s exhibits won’t just entertain — they will spark imagination, resilience, and collaboration,” said Portland Museum Executive Director Katy Delahanty in a May editorial for the Courier Journal. “Each environment will draw from the Ohio River’s rich history, blending folklore and fact in ways that engage and empower.”

“There is so much momentum in Portland right now—from the brand new PlayPort and Waterfront Park expansion to the upcoming AHOY Children’s Museum,” said Mayor Craig Greenberg in a release. “By investing in projects like AHOY, we’re strengthening early learning opportunities and supporting families where they live.”
