Community Development nonprofit OneWest hosted a dedication ceremony for a formerly abandoned property that has been transformed into new loft apartments and commercial space at 526 S. 18th St.
Originally dedicated to the memory of J. Michael Brown, a Black public service pioneer.
“This building represents what’s possible when we reinvest in the West End,” said Evon Smith, President and CEO of OneWest, in a release. “It’s a tangible example of progress — and dedicating it to someone who spent his life advancing justice and opening doors for others makes this moment even more powerful.”

Councilman Ken Herndon (District 4) also said, “J. Michael Brown’s unwavering dedication to justice, equity, and community empowerment has left an indelible mark on our city. This honorary street sign is a lasting tribute to a man whose legacy continues to inspire generations of leaders and advocates. It is a privilege to help ensure that his name and his impact are permanently woven not only in the West End but the fabric of the city.”
