Louisville Urban League Creates Juneteenth Community Calendar

Happy Juneteenth! June 19, Freedom Day

Looking for Juneteenth activities or have one to share? The Louisville Urban League has created a user-friendly Juneteenth calendar for the community.

Juneteenth is a celebration that commemorates the day that the news of emancipation from enslavement reached those in Galveston, TX. On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas. However, it was not until December, when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, that enslaved people were finally freed in Delaware and Kentucky.

The organization describes the calendar as, “… a dynamic, user-driven platform that allows for local individuals, groups, organizations, and businesses to share activities with the wider community. Anyone can contribute by creating a login and submitting an event.”
