Kentucky Senate Bill 2 aims to prevent hormone treatment or any surgery related to gender reassignment in incarcerated individuals. This would harm those who have pre-existing needs for transition. It also raises the risk of self-harm in individuals who won’t have those maintenance needs met while serving a prison sentence.
The Republican sponsors of the bill are: M. Wilson, M. Deneen, J. Adams, G. Boswell, J. Carpenter, D. Carroll, D. Douglas, G. Elkins, S. Funke Frommeyer, R. Girdler, D. Givens, J. Higdon, J. The bill is in committee with hearings today, Wednesday, March 12.
Lex18 reported that bill sponsor Sen. Mike Wilson told his fellow committee members, “If you’re incarcerated you are not entitled to have cross-sex hormones or sex change operations to change your sex from one to another.”
There have been zero gender reassignment operations in Kentucky’s correctional system. For reasons unknown, Wilson believes it could happen.
