Jefferson County Board of Education(JCBE) has named two finalists in the search for a new superintendent.
The board and screening committee conducted interviews with six candidates, narrowed from a group of 34 applicants presented to them by their national search firm, Hazard, Young, Attea Associates.
The two finalists are Ben Shuldiner and Dr. H. Brian Yearwood. Shuldiner is currently the superintendent of the Lansing School District in Michigan. Dr. Yearwood has had a decorated career as an educator and spent three years as superintendent of Columbia Public Schools in Missouri before his resignation in November to spend more time with his family in Texas. In August, he shared a cancer diagnosis with Columbia staff.
“Both individuals have a wealth of experiences and credentials that have prepared them for a leadership opportunity such as the superintendency of JCPS presents,” said Dr. Corrie Shull, chair of the JCBE, in a release. “Both individuals are capable of elevating student learning in our district, ensuring students continue to excel and our district will continue to flourish.”
The finalists will face another round of interviews and participate with the community, district staff, and other stakeholders in Q&A sessions this month. Two public Q&A sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, May 20. The first from 4 – 6 p.m. at the JCPS Center for Professional Learning (3902 Atkinson Square) and the second from 7 – 9 p.m. at Stopher Elementary (14417 Aiken Road). The A Louisville Path For Louisville organization, an Urban League project, focusing on Black community renewal through activism, investment, and civic participation, released a pledge to the local community. In the pledge, all community members, including parents, community leaders, business leaders, elected officials, and local media, were asked to commit themselves to fully engaging and holding this new superintendent and JCPS accountable.
The pledge challenges all community stakeholders to remain engaged with JCPS and the new superintendent.
